MEET THE AUTHOR
FEATURED AUTHOR: BRICKLEY JULES
Today I have the pleasure of introducing all of you to an amazing author who is very giving with her knowledge as well as very gifted with her writing. I happily introduce you all to Brickley Jules. Let’s hear what she had to say:
Hi Brickley, welcome.
How about we start by GETTING TO KNOW YOU, what GENRES DO YOU WRITE?
I write romance that ranges from chick lit to borderline erotic. I throw a little paranormal into the mix as well.
WHY DID YOU CHOSE THESE GENRES?
I write romance and paranormal because I love to read it. It comes naturally to me. Haunts me in my dreams even.
That is really cool! (Jacks)
Brickley can you fill us in on the TITLES OF YOUR BOOKS?
Her Unexpected Life
Out of the Blue
Vested In Her
I am always curious to know how a writer gets bitten by the writer bug. So I just have to ask you Brickley, HOW DID YOU START WRITING?
Back in 2015 I started writing reviews, a friend read a few and commented that I should try my hand at writing. She was unaware that I used to love to write poetry. I took that suggestion and metaphorically picked up my pen again.
Having a taste of your novels, we are glad that you did! (Jacks)
What is ONE THING THAT WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOU Brickley?
When I first started on this writing journey I worked with my oldest and published a few Children’s Books. My daughter is eight now and has three published books in her Book of Shadow Puppets series. You can find them under April Dawn Parker and Brianna Parker. The titles are Willow Visits Her Friends, Willow Travels the World, and Willow’s Friends Surprise Her.
Those sound incredibly interesting. (Jacks)
Outside of writing what are some of your OTHER INTERESTS?
Outside of writing, I’m a stay at home mom and work a few evenings during the week outside of the home. I love to read when I have time. I’ve recently started listening to audiobooks and enjoy my time in the car so much more now that I have.
Where do you DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?
Dreams and my over active imagination.
Giggles (Jacks)
Let’s talk a bit more ABOUT THE BOOKS, what should someone EXPECT WHEN READING ANY OF YOUR TITLES?
I can’t seem to help myself. Every story I write has a romance in it even when I don’t intend for it to.
I tend to have a female mc (main character) in my books that tells you their story in third person. Sometimes their counterpart even gets to chime in and give you his side as well.
I also end each story with a HEA (happy ever after) ending. But sometimes there may be issues that go unresolved until the next book in the series. Don’t worry I like HEA endings myself, so I’ll have to give them to my book babies.
Love to hear that! (Jacks)
Where did you draw your INSPIRATION from FOR YOUR CURRENT WORK?
My latest idea again was based on a dream. This is the second idea I’ve gotten from a dream.
Any traces of YOUR PERSONALITY IN YOUR MAIN CHARACTERS?
I may be a little sarcastic from time to time. (Whistles innocently.) And as a budding writer I’m still on my journey to discover my place in the world. But, I’m not sure the journey ever ends for us as nothing ever stays the same. The world is turbulent and we must adapt constantly.
So very true. (Jacks)
What is one of your FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT THE SERIES?
In Out of the Blue it’s the mermaids.
In Her Unexpected Life it’s Valerie’s rebirth so to speak.
And in Vested In Her it’s the bikers, of course.
Ooh, all sound fun! (Jacks)
Who are YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTERS AND WHY?
Boone and Miriam in Out of the Blue. Both are snarky and sarcastic. Super fun to write.
Cigarette smoking Ruby in Vested in Her is also fun to write with her outlandish ways. You never know what she’s going to say.
And hippy Fee from Her Unexpected Life is a hoot to write with her laid back persona.
They sound like a lively bunch! I am already rooting for them all! (Jacks)
Now let’s talk about SOMETHING SPECIFIC TO YOU Brickley, will you TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEBSITE http://www.brickleyjules.wordpress.com and also how you find INSPIRATION FOR YOUR WELL WRITTEN BLOGS?
I have a blog that I started as a way to connect with other writers. As a beginning writer, I had questions and I wanted real world answers.
When I first started out I did a bit of research on this thing called branding and how it can help you. The best piece of information I got out of the article was to be yourself. Don’t try and pretend to be something else. You are your brand. But [as a person] you’re multifaceted and not flat and you have to choose the “you,” you want represented. Pennames are a great way to do this. So, my blog is me but not all of me. I like quilting and making tutus for my girls but that doesn’t really fit [my penname] Brickley. I save those types of things for my personal social media accounts usually.
As my blogging journey continued, I started coming across posts by other bloggers that were helpful. I thought more people need to see these because there are a lot of budding writers out there like me. So, I started reblogging the great things I found on other blogs.
Please tell us WHY READERS, in your words, WILL CONNECT WITH THE BOOKS YOU WRITE?
I would say we could all relate a bit to Callisto, Valerie, and Haven. They each are trying to find their way in a new life. Callisto made the choice to start anew, but Valerie was thrust into it. And Haven just took it.
I’m in! (Jacks)
What is your WRITING STYLE?
I started out writing and editing every chapter as I went. I had some idea of the main story arc and the manuscript direction. But I got lost, and couldn’t remember things. Then I started summarizing chapters in a book and in the back made a page for each character. I had a spreadsheet with random ideas on it. I eventually color-coded it by possible book placement.
I would do research and then close my browser just to have to look it all up again. So, I started saving web pages in my bookmarks. This finally became copy and pasting to my excel sheet and then color-coded for book placement.
The notebook was big and floppy that I wrote chapter summaries in, so that morphed into index cards—which I love. I make those color-coded as well. I have character cards, store/place cards, belief/way of life cards, and summary cards of only important scene goings on.
When I type the end or finish a round of edits I try to put a month between times I work on my manuscripts. It may take me a month to get through it but I need that month distance for my own sanity. I hope to shorten this as I become a more experienced writer.
You took part in NANOWRIMO (National Novel Writing Month in November) and CAMPNANOWRIMO (Spring/Summer NANO) can you please share more about it?
NANOWRIMO
When I started NANO I wrote an outline literally the morning of giving myself some direction for Her Unexpected Life.
I was all set but when would I write? I still had the house to keep in order. I allowed myself to do house stuff till 11am then I wrote on Tuesdays and Thursday. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I wrote until 10am then again from 1pm to 2pm. I wrote after everyone went to bed or I got up early.
I finished NANO early and over my 50,000 word goal. Way over it if you count the 16,000 words I wrote on the side to fill in the giant pot hole for Out of the Blue.
It wasn’t easy, but nothing worth anything ever is. I had to turn the TV off. The WiFi on my laptop was disconnected. And I turned my cell over so I couldn’t see updates. I eventually turned most notifications off on everything.
CAMPNANO
I implemented all of those techniques when I did CAMPNANO in April and July. Camp is more relaxed. You can change your ultimate word goal anytime. You can select different cabin options. So, you can chose to be with like genre authors or people with similar word count goals.
I used the April camp to edit Out of the Blue and increase its word count. I accomplished this [goal] early again and dived into editing Her Unexpected Life after. The next camp in July I used to write Vested In Her.
You write an arc between chick lit and erotic, PLEASE SHED LIGHT ON YOUR FAVORITE ASPECTS?
I write romance because I love to read it, but it has lots of sub-categories of fun. My dreams and imagination lead me down these different categories with little effort. It’s when I try to go back and forth between the stories in the same day that problems emerge. But if I follow my muse it usually all works out.
Paranormal romance, like Out of the Blue, comes to me naturally. Things that aren’t human run rampant inside my head and have for as long as I can remember. I’m intrigued by all things paranormal. The unknown is exciting to me.
Chick lit has its own appeal for me. I love watching characters grow as they move through a story like [how] Valerie does in Her Unexpected Life. Books like this give me hope that the world isn’t set in stone. Because, if people can change then so can the world.
Then we come to Haven’s story in Vested In Her. It fringes on the edges of erotic. She and Riker lead me on a path that would rival any other sultry writing, but his tenderness and her feelings for him make it about more than just carnal fun. Don’t get me wrong the book wouldn’t be the same without it, but it’s not just about the sex. It’s about their connection. I think a lot of us desire such a connection.
What are some RESOURCES YOU USE as a writer to pull your stories together?
I read articles on writing and scour the internet for how to ‘show and not tell’ or why passive voice is bad just like everyone else. I even read a few on the thing I am researching just to ensure continuity.
But the best resource I’ve found is other writers. Get a writer friend and hope they let you pick their brain. I try to share things as I learn them. Being a writer is easy, being a better writer takes work. I want to write tight and avoid repeating myself. I know that is something only I can do through perseverance.
Completely true! (Jacks)
HOW IMPORTANT IS AN EDITOR?
Grammar rules are great, but I don’t have a head for those. So, I got myself an editor. She’s like a grammar wizard. I’m barely an apprentice. But I know that’s my weakness, so I spent money and found someone to help.
Who are some of your FAVORITE AUTHORS?
R.L. Stine was a childhood favorite of mine. Then I graduated to Anne Rice.
Recently, I’m into Lindsay J. Pryor and her Blackthorn paranormal series.
Jamie Farrel writes military comedic romances and I’ve been reading her Officer’s Ex-Wives Club series. It’s a great light read.
Angie Fox is another favorite of mine. She writes paranormal romance and mystery. I’ve started her Biker Witch series. It’s light for being a series about demons. I could name several more, but I’ll refrain.
What is one of the BEST pieces of ADVICE that you received or a QUOTE THAT YOU LIVE BY?
Keep at it. Don’t give up.
What is one TIP you would like to share FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS?
Just write, if you don’t write it you’ll have nothing to edit.
What’s NEXT FOR YOU?
What is the NAME OF YOUR UPCOMING RELEASE?
Her Unexpected Life
What should people EXPECT TO SEE from you IN THE FUTURE?
Out of the Blue and Vested In Her are both nearing completion so be on the lookout for those.
What are you MOST EXCITED ABOUT?
Getting Her Unexpected Life published.
