MEET THE AUTHOR
FEATURED AUTHOR: OLIVIA NOREM
I would like to welcome everyone to another author interview here at SBC. Today I have the great pleasure of interviewing a gifted author by the name of Olivia Norem.
Hello Olivia, welcome to SBC. Let’s start with a fan favorite question, WHAT GENRE do you write?
I write fiction, romance and erotica, simply because these genres both entertain and fascinate me. While I realize most authors specialize, for example, Steven King master of horror; my brain simply doesn’t work that way. I embrace and enjoy so many things life offers; all types of music, film, food… I couldn’t imagine limiting myself to one type of work.
What are the TITLES OF YOUR BOOKS Olivia?
HIS VIKING BRIDE is my debut novel. Wait and watch (*wink), I have nine books in various stages of completion, all in the above genres. You will see a very aggressive publishing schedule throughout 2017.
CAN YOU TELL US HOW DID YOU START WRITING?
I’ve been writing since I was (ahem) fourteen and first published a short story that same year in a local journal in Virginia. My calling came as a joke. On a Thursday, our creative writing teacher gave us an assignment, and the weekend, to pen anything we wanted. No limits. I locked myself away and wrote like someone possessed. I turned in a three-hundred page romance novel by Monday. He laughingly staggered when I handed him the manuscript and told me something I’ll never forget. “You’re a writer, don’t deny yourself this.”
I’m laughing about the person possessed thing. *giggles* (Royal)
What is one thing that you WANT US TO KNOW about you Olivia?
Tough question…I suppose it is how people who know me describe me, and how I wish to be remembered… I’m a modern day Mae West. Sexy, snarky, and shocking.
What an exciting mix. *wink* (Royal)
Outside of writing, can you tell us what are some of your OTHER INTERESTS?
Definitely the ocean. Living in Florida affords me a lot of outdoor time, access to the beach, walking, bicycling, etc. I love classic cars, travelling, interesting people, cats and complex cigars. Music of all kinds, from opera to rap and everything in between. There aren’t too many days that pass without some type of adventure or another.
Where do you DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION from Olivia?
[laughs] How much time do you have? Inspiration is all around, all the time. I constantly jot down notes and bits of scenes and character traits I observe daily. The truth is always more unbelievable. I also like extremes. I will have a cocktail at a swanky restaurant or a 4am breakfast in a bad corner of town just to observe things, smell the aromas and ask people their stories. Everyone I write about is inspired on some form of reality.
For the next five questions Olivia I wanted to know more ABOUT YOUR BOOK: His Viking Bride.
Let’s start with what should someone EXPECT WHEN READING THIS BOOK?
In His Viking Bride, you can count on being transported to a mythical time of icy climes, strong, undamaged characters, and lots of humor. Of course, some steamy sex as well. I prefer people who overcome situations due to their character traits, and not people who suffer some psychological damage. I revere and respect men and women and their relationships. Alpha personalities on both sides trend in all my work.
Sounds like fun. (Royal)
Where did you draw your INSPIRATION FROM FOR YOUR CURRENT WORK His Viking Bride?
Believe it or not, I was thumbing through Pinterest one day and saw a Nordic brooch. I was researching a Viking vampire character for my novel, AFTERMATH OF FIVE. I became so interested in this history; the ships, the trading, the clothes, the buildings, etc., my imagination soared. Veleif and Æstrid began to take shape in my mind, and I thought, how about a Viking romance?
I admit, it was challenging setting this book in a climate that couldn’t be more dissimilar from Florida. Snow? Ice? What is romantic about that? But using the lemons to lemonade approach, I believe readers will enjoy the nuances of the romance that ensues.
While HIS VIKING BRIDE is inspired by research, I have taken liberties with the facts. This isn’t a book that should be taken at face value for historical accuracy.
Lastly, one of my favorite Shakespeare comedies is THE TAMING OF THE SHREW. HIS VIKING BRIDE is my homage to the bard, drawing inspiration from his work.
Can I ask, are there ANY TRACES OF YOUR PERSONALITY in your main character Olivia?
Oh yes! Veleif, Æstrid, and even Arnor are some reflection of me. Strong wills, passion, humor, sometimes self doubt, but always a belief in “go for what you want.”
That’s awesome! (Royal)
Alright, how about I ask you Olivia what’s one of your FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT THIS SERIES?
While I followed a traditional romance structure in this book, my favorite aspect is I added in some very non-traditional elements. Hello? Vikings… The Vikings allowed me to take a fresh, and hopefully surprising, approach to some typical romance scenes.
Who is one of your FAVORITE CHARACTERS and why?
Veleif. I love swoon-worthy, alpha heroes, and Veleif is my ultimate warrior. He’s deeply driven, passionate and of course, heart-stopping breathtaking. His kisses will melt you for days and leave you weak-kneed, clinging to those strong arms to remain standing…
*sigh* (Royal)
Now it’s your turn, let’s dive into more about things more SPECIFIC TO YOU AUTHOR Olivia.
We would like to HIGHLIGHT YOUR WEBSITE. What is the address?
www.olivianorem.com
What is the ONE FEATURE on it that you are LOOKING FORWARD TO SHARING?
Exclusive content, some short stories and chapter releases. I also plan on adding in some “bonus” features, including in-depth author notes on my books as well as some deleted scenes. Think of it like the “bonus features” on your DVDs.
Can you describe for us what your WRITING ROUTINE is like?
Routine? [hearty laughter] I’m all over the place as far as hours, but I write every day. Compulsively. It is simply what I do. I often begin around 10 or 11pm and work until 8 or 9 in the morning, usually five to six days a week. I consume gallons of water and coffee (thinking juice), and break for cigars. If I’m writing, everything around me goes to waste, time has no meaning, and I’m lucky if I remember to eat. If I’m editing, the laundry manages to get done, my cat gets brushed, friends get visited, etc.
What DRAWS YOU TO A STORY and makes you want to write it?
I have a strange answer to this question. I start with characters and do in-depth studies on them. I think about them for a week or so, what do they like? What habits do they have? What are their mannerisms, etc.? The story shapes itself, and I feel I am often just a scribe, an observer as the characters move me along on their quest.
What is your FAVORITE PART OF LIVING IN TAMPA and have you incorporated it into one of your books?
My favorite part of living in Tampa is the weather which affords a long growing season. I never take a blue sky for granted, or a sunrise/sunset for that matter. I’ve watched the city expand immensely in the 35 years I’ve lived here. We have incredible restaurants and a dichotomy of culture. Funny, I haven’t used it in a novel as yet, but now that you’ve asked….
Well when you do use Tampa as a setting to a novel I know everyone over here at SBC and our readers would love to read it! (Royal)
What is your most FAVORITE PART OF THE PROCESS OF WRITING HISTORICAL ROMANCE?
The writing. Definitely the writing. The challenge of not using modern conveniences or language.
Olivia, how do you FLESH OUT YOUR CHARACTERS for your novels?
That is the longest part of my process. I think about what the character looks like, and usually do internet research for my “perfect face.” Then the physical description, their name, what they like to wear, eat, habits, etc. I make a physical file folder on the character and reference it often as the story unfolds. It is not uncommon for me to be somewhere and I’ll think, “How would Æstrid (or another character) react to that question?”
What should someone WALK AWAY WITH AFTER HAVING READ YOUR NOVEL?
A deep sense of pleasure and a smile when they remember my characters.
Can you tell us more about why readers, in your words Olivia, will connect with the books you write?
I write real, honest passion and emotion. I believe readers will connect with that and hopefully use it in their own lives.
So Olivia in WHAT WAY DO YOU WRITE, panster or do you plan out your stories with an outline?
I’m a hybrid writer. I plan a loose outline, usually on index cards. Then I let the details unfold according to the character traits. I never work in a linear fashion, but usually write a critical chapter somewhere in the middle of the book, then work backward and forward as I feel them.
Can you give us your best tip for FIGHTING OFF THE DREADED WRITER’S BLOCK?
I suffer the opposite of writer’s block. I am currently in the phase where I am consumed with so many ideas, I am weeding out the best ones to work on. I do not want to limit myself, but reality dictates I only have so much time left.
What is ONE FUN FACT that someone might not know about you?
I once played the wicked witch of the west in a play. Everyone said it was typecasting.
*giggles* (Royal)
Who is one of your FAVORITE AUTHORS Olivia?
Growing up Mrs. Mike by Benedict and Nancy Freedman moved me deeply. A great love story with very memorable characters. Currently, Karen Marie Moning’s Highlander series and Grace Goodwin’s Interstellar Bride series are my go to authors for delectable alpha males. Check them out!
Olivia what is one of the BEST PIECES OF ADVICE that you received or a QUOTE THAT YOU LIVE BY?
If your life were a book, would anyone want to read it? I was asked that at fourteen. By eighteen I had already done and seen more than most people their entire lives. I continue to create new memories each day with the caveat that my memoirs will only be read after I’m gone.
What is ONE TIP you would like to share FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS?
Read, read, and read some more, then write. Writing is work. Don’t talk about it, work on it.
Alright Olivia we’re are wrapping it up here. I do have just a few more questions for you. They all fall under us finding out WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?
First up, what are the names of your UPCOMING RELEASES?
