MEET THE AUTHOR
FEATURED AUTHOR: THERESA SNYDER
Hi everyone this is Royal. I’m excited because I have a fantastic treat to share with all of you. I got the chance to interview a pretty incredible writer named Theresa Snyder. Here’s your inside look at her answers to SBC’s questions.
The readers at Silver Beans Café would like to GET TO KNOW YOU THERESA
Tell us about the genres you write in and why you chose those genres?
“I write in four genres, paranormal, fantasy, sci-fi, and memoirs. I write in the first three because it is fun to play with imaginary characters and be able to set unique scenes in out-of-this-world places. I wrote my memoir because I felt it needed to be written and that part of my life chronicled.”
Can you give us the TITLES OF YOUR BOOKS?
“The Star Traveler Series is Sci-fi and has 6 volumes in the set currently. The Helavite War, The Heirs of Henu, Old Friends/New Enemies, The Malefactors, Cataclysm, and A Mear Sleight of Hand. (Mear is spelled correctly – it is a character’s name and a play on words.)
The Farloft Chronicles is Fantasy and has 7 volumes.
James & the Dragon, Kingdom of the Last Dragons,
Dragon Deception, Too Many Dragons, Three & a Half
Dragons, and Dragon Memories, Dreams and Reflections.
The Twin Cities Series is Paranormal and currently
contains 3 novellas. Shifting in The Realms, Shifting Agony
& Ecstasy, and Shifting Places.
The In2Minds Series is Sci-fi and currently has one
novella in the series with two more to come.
The memoir is called We 3.”
THERESA, how did you start writing? When did you know it was something you wanted to continue to do?
“I began writing at an early age. My mother encouraged me to write in a journal. I also loved writing old fashioned ‘snail mail’ letters and had 36 pen pals from my early teens into adulthood. I wrote me first book in 1990 and that was when I thought I might have a chance at publication, but it was never selected by the publishing houses I submitted it to. I was told they would have difficulty marketing it because it was not easily cataloged as either YA or Adult Sci-fi. At that time there had been nothing like the crossover readers of the Harry Potter phenomenon. The Helavite War, was my first book and the first in my Star Traveler Series. I took on a biweekly, human interest column in our local newspaper in the mid90s. I received a lot of really nice feedback and collected a sizable following during the four years that it ran. So, when my writing group suggested I indie publish I had more confidence. I went for it in May of 2013 by publishing The Helavite War on Amazon.”
That’s exciting. Let me switch on you a bit. (Royal)
What is ONE THING THAT YOU WANT US TO KNOW ABOUT YOU THERESA?
“I am very approachable. Like Farloft, my dragon friend, I love to make friends, chat and tell stories. We both love to give hugs too.”
That’s so cute. We at SBC are huggers too! (Royal)
Okay let me ask you this, outside of writing Theresa, what are SOME OF YOUR OTHER INTERESTS?
“I love to read and always have a book or two going. I read just about anything from poetry to biographies, from scifi to fantasy, and westerns to romance. Music is also one of my addictions. I like classical, jazz, ambient mostly, because I do not find them a distraction while I am writing. If something has lyrics I tend to break into song, much like my dragon, Farloft. My garden is a bit of a passion and you can even find tours of it on YouTube under my name and Our Quiet Corner, which is the name we gave our garden. Or go to my site, there is a link there. And lastly, I am addicted to movies. I love to sit in a dark room with strangers and watch big screen epics. I never miss an action film. I save the romances for home viewing where I can cry privately. I am a hopeless romantic and always want a happy ending.”
I’m sure a lot of our readers can relate with you on that. (I include myself in this, I love crying at happy endings.) (Royal)
Now for my next questions. Can you tell us, WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?
“My mother had a wonderful imagination and she instilled it in all her children. For instance, the ‘wee people’ lived in the pepper tree in the back garden. Mice could have tea using my doll tea set at night while I slept if I failed to put it away. I often left it out just for them.
I also might read something in the headlines or see a program on TV and it will ignite my imagination. For instance, there are three of these elements in my soon to be published Star Traveler #7 The Beast Within. One was a story I heard about the street children of Brazil, one was a program on tattoo parlors and the third was the concept I learned in school, that if you remove a species from the environment often another will fill its place. You’ll have to read the book to see how those all relate in my oatmeal of a brain.”
I think it’s great that your imagination got fed at a young age and that you keep expanding on it. I also like how you take things from your everyday life and turn it into a creative work of art. (Royal)
With that said, you have a vast collection of books under your belt Theresa, could you tell us a little more ABOUT THE BOOKS?
What should someone expect when reading your books?
“All of my books have humor and love in them. They are never strictly romance, or adventure, or fantasy. Like life itself, they contain it all.”
Where did you draw YOUR INSPIRATION from for your current work?
“My father loves wolves. I always wondered what the world would look like from their perspective. The Twin Cities Series allows me to explore that aspect of Cody/Scar’s personality.”
Any traces of your PERSONALITY in your main character?
“I think a bit of me bleeds into all my characters. I like to think of myself as being as wise as Farloft, my dragon, as brave as Scar, my wolf, as clever as Arr, my alien, and as loving as all of them put together.”
What is one of your FAVORITE THINGS about this series?
“I love seeing the world through a wolf’s eyes.”
Finally question in this series of questions, who is one of your FAVORITE CHARACTERS and why?
“I love Cody because he is troubled, but makes the best of what he has. He never gives up.”
Okay, now I want to dive into SPECIFICS ABOUT YOUR WORK.
FIRST, PLEASE TELL US MORE
ABOUT YOUR WRITING PROCESS
“What is my process for writing? Often the idea is a dream. No really, my mind seems to work overtime and I will often wake with an idea. After that I mull it over and add to it in my mind before I start to write. I compare it to a bowl of oatmeal that bubbles and needs stirring. I will worry the idea like a dog with an old bone, often taking the idea out to the garden with me, I toy with it. Sometimes I even find myself speaking the character’s dialogue out loud. I very rarely outline. I do make notes after the first draft is completed when I read it through for flow the first time.”
I SEE YOU HAVE A PODCAST,
WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF DOING IT?
“Best part of doing a podcast is getting through it without getting tongue tied. I am constantly trying to slow down and not stumble over some idea I am trying to convey. My mind moves much faster than my mouth. My dad used to say, ‘put your mind in gear before putting your mouth in motion.’ My mind is always in third gear.”
YOU ALSO DO BETA READS FOR OTHER AUTHORS, I’M SURE OUR READERS/ AUTHORS WOULD LOVE TO HEAR MORE ABOUT THIS.
“Recently, October of 2015, I did a beta read for a fellow author’s book. He made the comment that I should charge for my services because I did a better job than his current traditional editor. I am getting close to retirement and I love to help other authors, so I thought, ‘what the heck,’ I’ll give it a try. Affordable Proofreading & Editing Service, LLC was born. I have done over a dozen books since then and I have no regrets. I enjoy making another author’s work shine.”
AND WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING
ABOUT MULTIPLE GENRES?
“I love writing in multiple genres. I enjoy not being tied to just one.”
WHAT DO YOU FIND REFRESHING ABOUT WRITING IN DIFFERENT GENRES?
“When a fellow author said, ‘let’s write a paranormal series together,’ I jumped at it. In that world I have been able to write vampires, shape-shifters, fire demons, werewolves, elves, goblins and trolls.
My fantasy gives me the opportunity to spend time with my dragon. He is so very old and wise. I love him as a muse. Where my paranormal is exciting to write, my fantasy is relaxing even though it always has an undercurrent of adventure. Farloft, my dragon, and I have been together through many lives. He has tracked my soul through time. I think he is the closest thing to a soulmate I have.
I love my spacemen and am constantly delving deeper into their pasts and origins. They are a diverse group and their energy is contagious.”
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS
YOUR FAVORITE TIP?
“My favorite tip, and I think my best writing habit, is I keep a pad with me always. There is even one by my bed in case I wake up and am inspired. Great ideas are so easily forgotten or morph into something that is not as good once you finally have time to sit down at the computer.”
ALRIGHT, WHAT’S ONE LAST THING
ABOUT YOU THERESA YOU WANT TO SHARE?
“I have a lot of quotes I enjoy passing on. If you like quotes you can check out my stream on Twitter.” @TheresaSnyder19
Awesome I’m sure everyone will go check out everything that you just shared with us. But now it’s time for me to move on to the next line of questions. (Royal)
Since you have such a broad spectrum of genres and personal interests it made me curious to know who would you say is one of your FAVORITE AUTHORS?
“Let’s take this a step at a time, because there are books that stand out for me depending on how old I was when I read them, yet I still remember them and love them to this day.
The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams for a children’s book. I love the message, ‘even if your fur is rubbed off and your ears are all gone, there is still something there for someone to love.’
For middle school All Creatures Great and Small. I loved this whole series by James Herriot. They made me laugh so hard I cried and cry so hard I had to put the book down because I couldn’t see to read.
West with the Night by Beryl Markham for adults. This is a superb book and one I have loaned and gifted over and over again. I love the visuals this book draws in your mind as you read. I love to read it out loud, it begs to be heard. Markham had an incredible command of the written word.
And my latest in a long line of indie favorites is Iron Mike by Patricia Rose. It is sci-fi of the best kind, great characters, a unique plot and wonderful writing. This was her debut book. We can only hope for more from this marvelously talented and thought provoking author.”
All really great selections Theresa. (Royal)
Now let’s talk about the BEST PIECE OF ADVICE THAT YOU RECEIVED.
“Of course, your parents give you the best advice if we would only learn to listen LOL. But, the best advice I have been given recently was from my writing group who encouraged me to take the plunge into indie publishing. I should have done it sooner.”
Do you mind sharing A TIP FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS?
“Start your social media links as early as possible. It takes time to build a reader following. Be kind on social media. We should all be there to have fun, share and enjoy. It shouldn’t be a battle and there should be no wounded. If you don’t like what people say, unfollow or unfriend or block, don’t start a war. There are no winners in a war even in social media.”
So Theresa, WHAT’S NEXT for you? What book titles should we be on the look out for?
“I will be releasing the first three Star Traveler books as a
collection soon. The volume will be called The Adventure Begins. When I wrote the first sci-fi in the series I thought it was going to be my only book, however, the spacemen had other ideas and within the week, I started the second. But, the first sounds like it is the end…that there will be no more. I wanted to package the first three together so folks could see how my sci-fi world builds. I think once they read those, they will be hooked.
I have another paranormal in the Twin Cities Series
coming out in the fall. It is already completed and just in the proofing stage. The title is still in the works, but I think it will be Shifting – For Better or Worse.
The In2Minds Series is a collaborative effort between David Stevens and me. He has completed his part and passed it off to me. I am working on my part now and we hope to have it up for holiday sales.
And, of course, I cannot ignore my dragon and he wants a book containing stories from his travels as a youngling. I have two completed of the three which will be in the book. It will be called, Farloft – The Early Years.”
What should we EXPECT TO SEE FROM YOU IN THE FUTURE?
“I will always be writing. Whether it is more sci-fi, paranormal,
fantasy, memoirs, or something totally different, I cannot say. I am moved by events, emotions and imagination and I never know where they might take me.”
Closing out here, what are you MOST EXCITED ABOUT?
“The future and what lies ahead.”
Theresa Snyder, Silver Beans Café and I want to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to sit down with us. We really enjoyed getting to know more about you. I feel you are wise like Farloft. You have gifted us with some truly wonderful knowledge. Once again thank you. It was great having the opportunity to expose your amazing talent to our readers. I look forward (as do our readers I’m sure) to reading all of your future works.
BEFORE WE GO, PLEASE TELL US WHERE THE BEST PLACE IS TO FIND YOUR BOOKS AND MORE ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING RELEASES?
“The best place to find my book links and my social links is
my website. http://www.theresasnyderauthor.com
I am available on as many platforms for purchase as possible, in ebook and paperback.”
BLOG
“If you click on blogs on my website and chose the “Serial Story” blog, there is a popup there to sign up for my newsletter. I do not abuse the use of the email addresses I receive. In fact, I have yet to send out a newsletter, so you might get the first if you sign up. And the extra added attraction is if you stay for a while on the blog you will find a serialized story that I post to every Saturday. These stories often become books, so you might just get the opportunity to read a first draft of an author’s manuscript.”
