MEET THE AUTHOR
FEATURED AUTHOR: BELINDA BURKE
Hi everyone. It’s Royal back with another interview. This time I have the privilege to welcome a true talent, Belinda Burke.
Welcome Belinda, Thanks for joining us today. Let’s get start by getting to know more about your writing. What is YOUR GENRE choice?
Right now, it’s probably easier to list which genres I don’t write, but let’s see… Fantasy, erotica, romance, science fiction (both hard and soft) and various combinations of those genres are the mainstays of my plotting, but I’ve also been known to write fairy tales, horror, mythological retellings, and haiku…well. I did say it would be easier to say what I didn’t write! As to why…mostly that’s because my ideas don’t come to me in genre-boxes, they just come – so I write them!
You’re quite diverse. I love it. (Royal)
So Belinda, what are the TITLES OF YOUR BOOKS and the series they are a part of?
Currently, my EIGHT KINGDOMS series, the LUKA’S PACK series, FRANKENSTEIN’S EXPERIMENTS, and SCHOOL OF MONSTERS are all active – as in, new books are being added to them as I type this! THE ALPHA AND OMEGA series is now complete, as well as numerous stand-alone adventures, like SOPHIE BY THE SEA, a shark-shifter erotic novella, and RAKUSHINPU, the story of a Japanese spider demon and her prey…although Rakushinpu will be getting a prequel this Halloween!
They all are so super intriguing. (Royal)
Belinda, can you tell us HOW DID YOU START WRITING?
Let’s see…I was four, and my aunt read me A LITTLE PRINCESS, and I decided I wanted to be Sara so I could be a storyteller. At nine, I wrote STAR WARS fanfiction with my friend Joey when we should have been “silent reading”, and it was gloriously bad. After that, every summer I would steal my not-quite-uncle’s laptop and type stories that never got finished because the laptop was gone when vacation was over. Now I have my own, and the words go on!
What is ONE THING THAT YOU WANT US TO KNOW ABOUT YOU Belinda?
I am addicted to Space. If there is a sign-up sheet for “random people put names here to go to space tomorrow”, someone tell me! I will sign it!
Okay Belinda, outside of writing what are SOME OF YOUR OTHER INTERESTS?
Loads of things – I listen to every type of music I can get my hands on, from everywhere and every when I can get my hands on – experimental lyre is a favorite now. I play several instruments myself, so it’s fun to listen to, and always helps set the mood when I’m working, too.
Where do you DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION from Belinda?
I’m often asked what inspires me, or how I end up working on so many wildly different projects, and the simplest answer is the best and truest: Life Inspires! A stranger’s laugh, a new song or an old one, an odd shadow on a wall, an episode of STAR TREK or that weird tickling sensation when champagne bubbles go up your nose...everything and everyone is a muse for something.
Belinda since we have been diving into your books, let’s talk about what someone should EXPECT WHEN READING YOUR TITLES?
These new series based on Dr. Frankenstein are a little special, as they’re my first foray into science fiction! They’re also full of monsters and magic and mayhem galore, so fans of my other work should get their fill of the fantasy that is my mainstay – and of course, there’s more than a hint of love and lust in both new series, as well as the rest of my books!
Let me ask you Belinda, where did you draw your INSPIRATION FROM FOR YOUR CURRENT WORK?
The ‘EXPERIMENTS’ series, and THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE in particular, were originally going to be all about Dr. Frankenstein and Elisabeta, who is Dracula’s granddaughter, in their original time period. The school was going to teach monsters how to blend in…and then I watched a few Neil DeGrasse Tyson documentaries, watched YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN to commemorate the loss of Gene Wilder, and…suddenly, Frankenstein’s castle was on an asteroid. In space. Full of monsters still, but in space. The story has evolved from there.
Fascinating. I love to find out where author’s ideas for their stories come from. (Royal)
Belinda let’s talk your main character, any TRACES OF YOUR PERSONALITY there?
My fiancée has accused me of actually being a female Dr. Frankenstein, but I reminded him that all of my cackling is the result of writing evil plots, not performing evil experiments. On the other hand…there may not be much difference between the two?
Can you tell us Belinda, what is one of your FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT THIS SERIES?
DR. FRANKENSTEIN’S EXPERIMENTS started as a fun little side project for me, which has rapidly expanded into a fun little not-so-side project…or maybe a fun not-so-little side project? In either case, I can’t pick one favorite part – I love the whole premise, and getting to play in Dr. Frankenstein’s sandbox is loads of fun. I mean, a castle in space? All the old, classic monsters in space? Dracula’s granddaughter? (Yes she is also in space!) What’s not to love!
Alright Belinda will you tell us who is one of YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTERS and why?
Right this very moment, my favorite would have to be Dr. Frankenstein himself. He shows up not only in his EXPERIMENTS series, which follows his unusual romance with Dracula’s granddaughter, but also in SCHOOL OF MONSTERS, running even more experiments…on his monster students. He’s always a distractible, science-obsessed, smart mouth with too much sex appeal for his own good. I’ve been working on BLOODWORK, book two of the EXPERIMENTS series, and I find myself cackling out loud whenever I write his interactions with Dracula.
Belinda we noticed that you are studying Philosophy and English, in what ways do you INCORPORATE THOSE DISCIPLINES WITHIN YOUR WRITING?
The English has helped me enormously; after all, there’s no better way to learn to write than to write, and to read. Studying philosophy has allowed me extra insight into the human condition – the reasons why people do what they do, and how people have approached the idea of being people all through history.
I think it’s great that you are using Philosophy and English this way. (Royal)
You write a broad range of genres, but to paraphrase you, they all tend to have a little lust and love snuck into them, we love that Belinda. Can you tell us, how important is getting it in? DO YOU ALWAYS PLAN FOR THE ROMANCE or does it every just surprise you as you are writing it?
Hmm…it seems to depend on the story. Sometimes I go into a plot knowing that the characters are going to jump each other at the first opportunity, and sometimes they fall for each other partway through. And sometimes I intend for them to be perfect partners…and instead they fight me all the way through. But the threads of love and sexuality come pretty naturally, just like threads of angst, drama, mystery or wonder. It’s all part of the human experience!
With all of your titles, HOW DO YOU GET IT ALL IN? Do you schedule time every day to write or how do you focus to get it all done?
I write every single day, for a minimum of six hours. It’s my job – so I treat it like one, even if it happens to be work I greatly enjoy! But that six hours is just for the writing - additional time goes to social media, contemplating cover art, and interviews like this one.
Your latest book is a bit of a mashup, which we love, monster in space, a non-traditional combo, are there ANY OTHER UNIQUE AND REFRESHING IDEAS like that cooking up IN THE FUTURE for you Belinda?
Oh most definitely. Non-traditional and mash-up are my favorite things! Let’s see…on the menu currently, a Tang dynasty, m/m Snow White, set in an alternate universe where all the great empires of history are in their golden age at the same time. Oh, and MERCURY SONATA – pirates. On space dragons. That’s going to be fun!
You have books centered on licks and bites, care to ELABORATE JUST A BIT for everyone reading this?
Ah, the licks and bites! That is less about the books and more about their excerpts – I know many people read at work, or while out and about, so all my NSFW excerpts are under the ‘licks’ menu on my website, to keep them separate. The less-steamy bits are ‘bites’, and have their own home, too.
Cute menu titles. As a romance lover the titles for the menus already sparks my imagination. *wink* (Royal)
Belinda what was the LAST BOOK THAT YOU READ THAT INSPIRED YOU in some way?
That would have to be ANONYMOUS REX, a fun bit of a detective mystery in which a secret society of dinosaurs lives hidden among us. It’s also a bit of science fiction, and it gave me the guts to play around with traditional monsters and science fiction!
Can you tell us more about why readers, in your words, will CONNECT WITH THE BOOKS you write Belinda?
It's my hope that readers will connect with the characters, with the questions they ask and the what if? of the plot and story. I want them to find something that moves them, or makes them think, even if just for a moment – something that pulls them out of the here-and-now and into a world where other things, maybe impossible things, are possible after all.
In WHAT WAY DO YOU WRITE Belinda, panster or plan out with outline? What is the best part of writing to you? What is your best tip to fight off the dreaded writer’s block?
This is always a fun set of questions, because while I do write with an outline, it never lasts for very long. An outline is more like a guide to what I hope will happen than anything else.
That leads right into the next question, because the actual process of writing – the discovery of what the story is actually going to be, is the best part for me. I love finding out the secrets of the next page…which leads into the next question!
I avoid writer’s block by always having a dozen different projects going at once. Somebody’s secrets are always interesting enough to get me motivated and back to work – so my top tip is: Don’t Overfocus! Work on two or three things and let your brain play where it wants to, at least once in a while.
Great way to stop that awful writer’s block Belinda. And an awesome tip. (Royal)
What is one FUN FACT that someone might not know about you Belinda?
I still love Black Isle’s old Bhaalspawn Saga more than any other game ever. Yes, I admit to PC gaming. I Admit!
And Belinda, we would like to know who is one of your FAVORITE AUTHORS?
Growing up, my favorite author was unquestionably Frank Herbert, after I discovered DUNE in my elementary school library. Tolkien was a close second, but DUNE won over LORD OF THE RINGS because it was in space! These days I’m also growing fond of early horror – thus the new FRANKENSTEIN series – and reading Stephen Hawking. My father’s old copy of A BRIEFER HISTORY OF TIME is good stuff for the science lover in me.
What is one of the BEST PIECES OF ADVICE that you received or a quote that you live by?
Ah, that would be Rumi! “Set your life on fire. Seek those who fan your flames.” I love Rumi in general, but that one quote carries much meaning in few words.
Your right Belinda, a lot is said with those few words. (Royal)
Belinda, what is ONE TIP you would like to share FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS?
The magical formula for being an author is… Write. Right now! Also in a few hours. Definitely tomorrow. And the day after that, and the day after that, and… Forever! In between, read. Everything!
Alright Belinda we want to find out WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?
What is the name of your UPCOMING RELEASE?
Coming up are BLOODWORK, book two of DR. FRANKENSTEIN’S EXPERIMENTS, and CAT TOY, book three of DR. FRANKENSTEIN’S SCHOOL OF MONSTERS!
And what should people EXPECT TO SEE FROM YOU IN THE FUTURE Belinda?
Definitely more of both these series; they’re being released on alternate Tuesdays right through Halloween! A prequel to RAKUSHINPU set in Edo period Japan is coming at Halloween, too, and ORIGIN, a retelling of the Lycaon myth and the origins of Greek werewolves, will be out in November.
Only a few more questions here Belinda, but before we let you go we want to know what are you MOST EXCITED ABOUT?
There’s always something new around the corner, and the most exciting thing on the menu for me at the moment is the science fiction series I have secretly been working on – MERCURY SONATA. It’s set forty-two thousand years in the future (yes, Douglas Adams fans, that’s Forty-two thousand) and follows a pirate crew on a space dragon as they seek glory and fight a space theocracy!
Now I’m excited with you. (Royal)

Alright SBC readers until next time, happy reading.
But before I go, here's a great blurb from Belinda.
Blurb: Dr. Frankenstein’s Experiments, No. 1: The Pleasure Principle: The doctor is in… Dr. Frankenstein has founded a school...for the monsters of the Old World. Of course, not just any premises will do for such an odd assortment of students. In search of the perfect environment, Frankenstein has sent his castle into space and reassembled it on an asteroid. There, he does as he likes, to the acclaim of scholarly circles that once reviled him. The only thing missing has been a proper laboratory assistant, and a research subject worthy of his time. Elisabeta Tepes, the granddaughter of Dracula, has grown up in the predatory silence of her grandfather’s halls. A student of the medical and biological sciences, she has wanted Frankenstein since they were introduced, centuries before. The man and his mind have both enticed her. Now, Elisabeta is leaving Earth behind to enroll in his school for monsters. The syllabus, however, isn’t what she’s interested in. Elisabeta wants Frankenstein to teach her the pleasure she's been waiting for, not brain chemistry. Lucky for her, Dr. Frankenstein wants someone to help with his…experiments. |
