MEET THE AUTHOR
FEATURED AUTHOR: DAKOTA STORM
Hi there. It’s Jacks. Today it is with great pleasure that I share my latest interview. I sat down with author Dakota Storm, who is one of the friendliest and wildly talented authors contributing written works in our time. The more I read her romance books, the more I look forward to getting the next one! Who is erotic novelist Dakota Storm? Well if you haven’t heard of her yet, for that answer, let’s hear what she had to say during our talk:
Hi Dakota, thank you for popping by.
Let’s jump right in and GET TO KNOW YOU a bit better.
So let me ask you, WHAT GENRES DO YOU WRITE?
I write in two genres. Dakota Storm is the pen name I use for my erotica works, though there are underlying stories in all my works. I do write under my real name, but for now that’s a secret. Maybe in time I will step out of that particular closet.
Can you please share some of the TITLES OF YOUR BOOKS?
The True Shades of Passion series. Includes Red, Yellow, Pink, Green and Orange.
The Special Forces series includes 00sexy, Melting for the Marines, and Delta Force Desire.
Warming the Bed #1 and #2, which are compilations of short stories. Explosive Chemistry, which is a collaboration.
Wow, you have been busy! Just so that you know, I have read and love most of those!
As I make notes, to self, on the titles I want to read next, do you mind filling me in on HOW YOU STARTED WRITING?
I didn’t actually start until 2013, though I always had that story running through my head from when I was little. I started writing erotica in 2015 after a friend suggested I try. She thought it would be a good fit, however at the time I wasn’t so sure.
All of your readers have got to thank that friend! These are such smart and fun, sizzling sexy, and completely riveting books! They are easy to fall in to. I have to say, giggling, from the first line to the last I am usually hooked.
So I have got to ask, WHAT IS ONE THING WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOU?
The Dakota part of my pen name was a nickname given to me by my grandfather. He always said I was born in the wrong country because of my fascination with all things American Indian and cowboy.
The way a penname takes shape is always exciting to find out! The story of a name is just as much of a treasure as the author’s books most times. And your name’s origin is quite a cool story!
Okay Dakota, outside of writing, what are some of your OTHER INTERESTS?
I read a lot, or I did when I had the time lol. I try and read mostly other Indie authors, and then I review. Reviews are the life’s blood of the Indie author, so it’s only fair I do what I can to support others like myself.
Agreed, that is so very true. Any MORE INTERESTS TO ADD TO THE LIST?
I do spend a lot of time walking. I have a German Shepherd cross Husky, and he needs the exercise. Unfortunately that means I am walking an average of two miles daily come rain or shine. (smiles)
I think all pet owners can relate. Fur babies are one of the best gifts of life and most definitely keep us on our toes!
Switching things up a bit, can I ask you, WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?
It can be from anywhere. A picture, music, something that happens during the day, and yes, sometimes even a person.
You have a gift for capturing those moments which inspire you. It clearly shines through your books!
Dakota, let’s talk a bit more ABOUT THE BOOKS.
What should someone expect WHEN READING ANY OF YOUR TITLES?
They should expect to relate to the characters, in the sense that they could be real people, and a sensual tension that arouses their desires and leaves them squirming in their seat (winks) ;)
Oh, I love that—mission accomplished!
And that makes me wonder, where did you draw YOUR INSPIRATION from FOR YOUR CURRENT WORK?
Some of my inspiration comes from personal past experiences, things that really did happen, while the rest is just my mind taking it where, perhaps, I was too shy to go when they were happening, though some is purely imagination. I won’t say which is which though.
A lady has got to have her secrets! (giggles)
That begs the question now doesn’t it Dakota, given what you just shared, are there any TRACES OF YOUR OWN PERSONALITY IN YOUR MAIN CHARACTER?
Yes, mostly the characters curiosity and willingness to learn, but there will be more of my nature in some of the other books I have plans to write.
Let me ask you this, what are some of your FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT ANY OF YOUR SERIES?
In the True Shades of Passion series I enjoy the fact that Molly’s lessons get steamier as they progress, and a new lesson is in every book.
In the Special Forces series I enjoyed the opportunity to let my characters have free reign and do what they pleased, and they did.
If you had to choose, WHO IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTERS AND WHY?
Well I’d have to say Molly out of the True Shades of Passion series. She’s brave, willing to try new things, but she’s also strong enough to voice her doubts and fears. To me that’s the true meaning of strength.
Agreed, it truly is!
Let’s talk some Dakota facts, you know, SOMETHING SPECIFIC TO YOU AS AN AUTHOR:
Dakota, I find that people really miss out when they have not visited an author’s WEBSITE, but yours IS NOT ONE ANYONE SHOULD MISS OUT ON. dakotastormerotica.wix.com/author is wildly interactive, has thought provoking tidbits, and is features deliciously sexy content. There is this quote, I don’t think that I have read it anywhere except on your website, about romance junk food versus sating ones appetite fully with an erotic novel—when done right. I am paraphrasing, the statement itself is a MUST READ, and had my buddies and I chatting about it over lunches. I am not doing the statement justice—intentionally—you’ve got to read it! So, after the interview, SBC readers pop over to Dakota’s site to read it as well as the other great goodies she has on it.
Having said that, Dakota, what is the RELEASE ORDER OF YOUR BOOKS?
The order of the True shades of Passion series is Red, Yellow, Pink, Green, and Orange. I can tell you there will be another two.
The order of the Special Forces series is 00sexy, Melting for the Marines, and Delta Force Desire.
Warming the Bed is numbered #1 and #2.
Explosive Chemistry was just released, so that’s the latest release to date.
Why might people CONNECT WITH YOUR BOOKS?
I hope my readers will connect with my books for the realism of the characters in my True Shades of Passion series. I’ve kept them as every day kind of people so that my readers can imagine themselves in their shoes. I think if there is an element of realism then it heightens the experience for the reader.
That realism you have accomplished in spades.
What about any of the other titles, WHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE WILL CONNECT WITH THEM?
As for the Special Forces series, those I wrote for all the readers out there that have a thing for uniforms, or at least the men that wear them, though I do support our military, and honour them when I can, and when the Special Forces box set is released it will have a dedication to all those men and women who walk the walk.
That’s amazing!
If you would, can you please share more about BEING A MEMBER OF IASD (Indie Author Support Discussion)?
The IASD (Indie Author Support and Discussion) started out as a Facebook page invented by Mr Paul Ruddock. It was where he invited other indie authors he met to share and discuss ideas, and to pass on any information that might help anyone else. I was lucky enough to be invited to join the group of very talented people, and under my other name have worked with a few. All kinds of information is thrown in there, from formatting, to book covers, right the way up to publishing and marketing. Anyone can post a question in there and you are guaranteed to have at least a dozen answers on how they have dealt with the issue. It’s an amazing group, and I have yet to find one that has that amount of people willing to help others. There is now a website for the group, where you will find all the authors works, information on the writing and publishing of books, as well as tips on how to go about getting done what you need without having to spend a fortune. There is such a mix of genres there that everyone really should pay a visit just to find a new favourite author, and you can find it here https://indieauthorsupportanddiscussion.com/
That’s a great find! Thanks for sharing it!
Please tell us more about BEING A WICKED PEN AUTHOR on Mr.Blackthorne’s website.
I am also a member of the Wicked Pen Writers on http://mrblackthorne.com/ and have been almost as long as I’ve been writing as Dakota Storm. Mr B., as he’s affectionately known by the WPW’s, sent me a DM asking if I would like to feature a short story on his site. I’d never done one before, but he assured me I could do it, and the length of it didn’t matter too much. I wrote and sent him Night Play, and have been doing it ever since. He’s a wonderful support, and we know he has big plans for the future, though they are all under wraps at the moment, even from the WPW’s. Now the WPW’s themselves are a group of very talented writers. We support each other and help out where we can. If there’s anything you’re struggling with they all come to the rescue, and that includes any grief we get on any of the social media platforms as well. It’s like being a part of a big, sometimes boisterous, and sometimes argumentative, but all the same, a family, albeit an internet one. We have spoken of a Mr Blackthorne group get together, and boy that would blow the roof off of wherever we are.
Dakota, IN WHICH WAY DO YOU WRITE, as in are you a “panster” or do you plan out your writing with an outline?
As for the way I write, it’s mostly by the seat of my pants. Every time I try and get characters to do something I think they should, they very often pull a mutiny and I end up wondering just how I got where I did. So for me it’s easier to let them lead, than it is to try and make them do what they don’t want to. And yes, I realise how mad that makes me sound lol. (smiles)
(Giggling here) I think I get what you are getting at. And I have to say, the choices you make (within the novels) are very rewarding!
Speaking of keeping things fun with writing, I noticed that you occasionally do COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS with other authors, what is THE MOST FUN PART ABOUT THEM?
I’ve just finished a collaboration with Zak Hardacre on Explosive Chemistry. It was the first collaboration for the both of us, and probably not done in the original way of collaborations. Zak started the story, wrote his bit and sent it to me, then I took over, wrote my bit, and sent it back. A few times we were both shocked when the other seemed to read our mind on where the story was going, and yet other times it went in a different direction which we then had to take the next part from. I have to be honest and say the really technical parts I left to Zak, seeing as he’s an exsolider so he knew the terminology, and the way things would be set up. He left one of the big sex scenes to me, and I took pity on him and allowed that, but I did push for him to write the sex scenes with me, so the rest of the book is an amalgamation of the two of us writing. It was good fun, and many an email winged its way back and forth between us, but the melding of different writing styles fits well. For most of the after writing issues we split them up, though we both had a say in what we did. The cover was made, then alterations were done until we were both happy, and eventually Zak uploaded it. He was a pleasure to work with, his light hearted banter, and British sarcasm, which being Welsh I’m used to, made time fly and the book almost write itself. We’ve had a lot of support that we both appreciate, and we’re both looking forward to see what happens with it.
You are one of the nicest and best author’s on twitter. Do you have a MESSAGE TO ANYONE THAT FOLLOWS YOU?
And if it’s okay I would like to thank all my readers for their support, their getting in contact is always appreciated, and I love to be able to talk to them. Just receiving a review, or a comment on twitter thrills me to bits. I know some really like my voice posts, and I have something in the works for that as well, and no, I can’t divulge what it is yet, but it is coming very soon I promise.
Dakota, will you roll back the curtain as to who are some of YOUR FAVORITE AUTHORS?
Growing up I was a big werewolf/vampire fan, so Laurell K. Hamilton, Sherrilyn Kenyon, and Christine Feehan were but a few I enjoyed reading. Though who can leave out the master off all things that go bump, Stephen King.
Just lately I have found a few favourites in genres I never read before. Selene by Ashlee Shades. Wow what a way to get revenge! I really liked the main character (smiles). Broken and Abused by Tim Dutton. I’ve never liked first person reads all that much, but this is like having someone tell you a story in person, and don’t tell anyone, I burned lunch because of that one lol.
Those are the good ones!
Go ahead Dakota, please continue.
There is also Custom Fit by Lexi Miles, a wonderful read to take you away from life for a while, and boy, hot hot hot (smiles)
That is sweet of you to share your list. I am sure that all of the authors deeply appreciate that you enjoyed what they have written! And now I am going to make a couple notes of all of those as I ask you this next question.
If you had to say Dakota, what was one of the BEST PIECES OF ADVICE THAT YOU RECEIVED or a QUOTE THAT YOU LIVE BY?
One of the best pieces of advice I’ve been given is “When you get knocked down, pick yourself up, dust yourself off, look life right in the eye and say I’m not done yet.” That’s courtesy of the same grandfather I mentioned earlier.
Wise fellow! And thank you, that is awesome advice to carry forward!
You have written several titles, care to share a TIP FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS?
Write because you want to, not because you think it will make you rich. It’s happens, sure, but it’s a one in a billion chance, and while I do wish that for everyone who picks up a pencil to write (so to speak), it isn’t likely. So write because you can’t not write. Write because it’s an itch in your soul that needs scratching.
I have to ask you, Dakota, WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU:
What is the name of your UPCOMING RELEASE?
I’m working on the next True Shades of Passion installment, and I can tell you this one will be called Purple, though I have only just began so it will be a little while yet.
What should people EXPECT TO SEE from you IN THE FUTURE?
They’ll see the True Shades of Passion series finished and released as a boxed set, but they will also see a few other stories I have lined up come to fruition. Some that will stand alone, and maybe another series or so.
I know that readers are happy to hear this!
What are you MOST EXCITED ABOUT?
At the moment I’m excited about the possibility of another collaboration. I can’t say who just yet, in case they wish to use a pen name, but I’m thrilled that he’s agreed to do it. Oops, did I just give that away? Then I’d best not say anymore (winks) ;)

Author Dakota Storm left us with a taste of her book, DELTA FORCE DESIRE. Check it out now!
DELTA FORCE DESIRE
Rylan is on the Double M Ranch to help his long term friend catch, and deal with, whoever is using his property for illegal operations, offering him the opportunity to take down the very men responsible for his friend’s death. He never expected to find a woman who would fire his blood and make him burn for her.
Emma finds herself on the same ranch in search for her missing eleven year old brother. While camping out hidden in one of the ranch’s big trees she spots a man who moves with such lethal grace he makes her heart pound. He stalls her breath in her throat and she can’t take her eyes off him, though she knows nothing about him. Yet.
The temperature rises, and things begin to heat up between them as well as the mission they’re both a part of. The only question left is who, or what, will come to a climax first?
