Today SBC welcomes the talented writer E.L. Roux. Here’s what she had to say to me, Royal, when we sat down.
What’s your GENRE E.L. Roux?
I write Science Fiction Romance because I love the idea of taking today’s cutting edge science experiments and discoveries and imagining what could happen with it in the future. I also like to explore a world where everyone is treated equally, and the population represented reflects the diversity of today.

Can you tell us the TITLE OF YOUR BOOK?
Unexpected Revival, released date in January 2017, first in a new series about women from the past who save the future, under my pen name E.L. Roux
So E.L. Roux, we would like to know, when did you START WRITING?
I’ve been writing for years, and through a variety of genres including Paranormal, Suspense, and Erotica, but when I started this novel, my first in science fiction, something finally clicked and I realized this was the series I was meant to publish.
What are some of your OTHER INTERESTS outside of writing?
For the longest time I taught Fencing at a local nonprofit and I really can’t wait to get back into sword play. I’m also really interested in seeing where this 3D printing will be leading society in both medical and personal use.
Time for me to get a few more details from you E.L. Roux about your books. Let’s start with what should SOMEONE EXPECT WHEN READING THIS BOOK/ SERIES?
I work very hard to try and guess how today’s inventions will work in the future, so most of the science I use is based in the studies of today. I also try and write inclusively, when writing and make a diverse group to pull from that don’t represent stereotypes. In Unexpected Revival, one of the hardest parts of my novel was creating characters that worked together and didn’t reflect only one race, ethnicity, sex, and orientation.

Can you tells us E.L. Roux where did you DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION FROM FOR YOUR CURRENT WORK?
I tend to have a few ideas playing in my mind at the same time and like to think about the ways they’d interact. Usually the ideas come from science articles I read on line on new and exciting discoveries in space, technology and medicine.
Can you give us a look inside the book with a BLURB about it?
The first in a new Sci Fi Romance series about women from the past who save the future. Shannon, who died in the year 1999, finds herself unexpectedly revived over a 1000 years later. Krogen, the company that revived her, hopes she could provide information on the alien attack that occurred shortly after her death to stop a new impending attack by the Anunnaki. The problem is she died right before it happened and has no memory of the events that led up to her death. Krogen demands repayment in the form of exploratory work at the edges of the galaxy deciphering an old rusted relic left there after the last war. Everything is going as best as can be expected until Shannon realizes that she's falling for one alien in particular, D'lane. He's causing all sorts of emotional and physical responses that are inappropriate and a distraction considering the galaxy is on the brink of war.
D'lane, the emissary from planet Chiwa’r also threatened by the new attack and captain of the ship T’gevus faring Shannon to the rusted relic, has committed his entire life to saving the galaxy no matter what the cost. He didn't expect to be attracted to Shannon, especially since humans want nothing to do with aliens, but he's falling hard and his mission's become compromised.
With fellow humans wanting nothing to do with an outdated model, and a bunch of aliens whose planet is also threatened by the coming invasion, Shannon's shoved into the future without an idea on how she should operate in this new time. With the galaxy on the brink of a new war, can Shannon help save the future or will she be doomed to repeat a past she died in.
What is one of your FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT THIS SERIES E.L. Roux?
I really enjoy the shear possibilities that arise in a world and future that I've created. I really have no limits on characteristics, personalities, lifestyles, and people that I use. It boggles the mind, and I have to pull myself back from time to time in going overboard. The hard part of it all is keeping the descriptions clear and concise without overdoing it.
We noticed that you have a FONDNESS FOR SPACE AND STAR TREK, will this be SEEN IN YOUR UPCOMING SERIES The Revival? Also, can you go into more detail about the series?
The Revival series is about women from the past who helps save the future, because of this I get to have my characters not quite understand what's going on around them, be shocked by new species, and places. I also get to explore possibilities on inclusion all across the spectrum with ethnicities, sex, orientation and attitudes. Like in Star Trek, none of my characters are looked down on for being one sex or the other, they aren't treated differently because of it, and are not threatened with sexual violence. My characters are round, unique, and different but fit well together in my world. There's plenty of conflict, don't worry, but it surrounds actual people and events instead of gender, orientation, or species.
We hear that you LOVE CONVENTIONS of different types. Tell us more about that.
I love conventions! I go to writer conventions, as well as comic and anime conventions. I love writing conventions because I learn something new about the craft and the industry at every event. The Comic Con and Anime Conventions are fun because I usually do a costume and get to watch others as they get to become a character out of a story. It allows people to have fun, and explore the world around them in a way we are unable to do in our everyday lives.

Okay E.L. Roux, what is one of your FAVORITE WRITING TIP?
My favorite writing tip is "I'm writing a first draft and reminding myself that I'm simply shoveling sand into a box so that later I can build Castles." by Shannon Hale. I love this quote so much because it reminds me that I'm not going to get the perfect novel out on the first try, but I need to get it out in order to make it great. Words on paper, even if their bad, can always be changed and revised, but nothing gets you nowhere.

What do you want people to TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR BOOK? What are your books REALLY ABOUT? Is there a DEEPER MEANING?
I hope when people read my book they're able to take away from them that a strength of character is what will get you through the hard times. If you don't learn to believe in yourself and trust your judgement, you'll never be able to cope with anything that's thrown at you in life. That doesn't mean that you have to go it alone, the hardest step for anyone to make is trust another and that is what my novels are about. Taking that first step and trusting that someone else has you, supports you, and is there for you in whatever capacity you need them to be. I also hope that readers see how my characters interact and think nothing of it. I have an alien species that gets to choose the sex they want to be when they mature, while another species has mates that help them find their biologically compatible pair. I also include people who have a wide range of sexual orientation that reflects what is known about our current social structures. I try to have all of these factures flow together, in and out of the main storyline without having any stereotypes play a part.

E.L. Roux, are you a planner or a panster?
I’m mostly a pantser (non-plotter), so I tend to have a general idea of how I want to story to play out and the world the characters will occupy but no real path or idea of conflicts along the way that might occur. The few times I’ve attempted to plot, I either push through what I had thought would be the whole novel only to find it’s only half of it or my storyline diverges entirely. I do tend to spend some time figuring out motivation for my characters, and how the world they live in works but usually the interesting tidbits arise when I'm actually typing and not beforehand. When I do run into walls I try many different ways to get around it. One is to skip ahead of whatever issue is causing the problem and come back to it later. Another is to think around the problem with possible ways to resolve what's blocking me and seeing which one works best with my storyline. One other way is talk it out with someone else, I usually turn to my sister and explain what's happening with my story and tell her the problem. She usually throws some ideas around and one of them either works or provides an avenue for me to figure out what works.
Can I ask you for more personal insight on E.L Roux?
I’ve been writing for years now, but nothing I really felt would be book worthy until last year when I started my Revival series about women from the past who save the future. As for everything else, I’m still in school (6 years now, after working in the aerospace field for 6 years before that) trying to figure out how prosthetics and orthotics along with the 3D printer play into my future. I have a cat, a compulsion for coffee and chocolate, and try not to get to involved in possible futures with all the exciting technology being developed today.
Let me ask you this E.L. Roux, who is ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE AUTHORS?
I read quite a bit of Linda Howard when I was younger, as well as Linea Sinclair, Catherine Spangler, and Dara Joy. Now I really enjoy Nalini Singh, Grace Draven, Charlee Allden and Alison Aimes.
What is one of the BEST PIECES OF ADVICE that you received or a quote that you live by E.L. Roux?
The Science Fiction Romance field used to be very small so getting beta readers or critique partners in the field was virtually impossible. Out of all the advice I’ve received so far, the best advice always makes me rethink why something is happening, or ask myself why I needed an event to happen. Anything that helps me improve my storytelling and character development is always a plus!
What is ONE TIP you would like to share FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS?
You can't publish anything if you don't finish it! Try to turn off your inner editor and critic when writing, it's very hard but totally worth it in the end.
