MEET THE AUTHOR
FEATURED AUTHOR: WILLIAM BESWICK (W.H. BESWICK)
Hi all, It’s Royal here. Today I have the pleasure of talking with a great author, W.H. Beswick. He took time from his busy schedule to answer our questions here at SBC.
Here’s what he had to say.
So let’s start this interview by GETTING TO KNOW YOU and your books. Let me ask, WHAT GENRE do you write?
I have written a few different genres including an attempt at a mystery which I am still pondering. I wrote a horror novel with one of my favorite characters. Lately my attention has been on young adult science fiction.
Your work is very diversified. I think that’s awesome. (Royal)
William, Can you tell us your PEN NAME and the TITLES OF YOUR BOOKS?
I write under the name W.H. Beswick. Zero and Chasing Zero are the first two books in my new series. Hunting Zero should be out later this year. Have Stake Will Travel is a horror story about a vampire slayer for hire. FBR is a sci/fi action novel.
Alright William, HOW DID YOU START WRITING? When did you realize writing was your gift?
I can’t remember not enjoying not telling stories. My youngest memory of writing is back in fifth grade. I wrote a story called The Money Machine. My teacher said in a polite way that I had an odd imagination. This was reinforced in college in a creative writing class. We were asked to write on creativity. I wrote about the creativity of criminals. Surprisingly it wasn’t until college that I realized not everyone could write a story.
It great how you took that experience and turned it into the books you write now. (Royal)
Now, can you tell us what is one thing that you WANT US TO KNOW ABOUT YOU William?
I am at my happiest writing. I love to sit down and say what if?
Many times I am impressed by other writers. The first time I read
LORD OF THE RINGS. I almost stopped writing. I was so intimated by the beauty and scope of the novels. I got over it. Then Harry Potter came along.
Very interesting. And a little side note, I’m a fan of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter too. (Royal)
Outside of writing William, what are some of YOUR OTHER INTERESTS?
I love music. I always have music playing when I write. From rock and roll to classical. It depends on my mood.
I like to go biking and hiking. I walk in the rain which is easy to do in Oregon.
Where do you DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION from?
I draw my inspiration from other writers. I read their books and get ideas from their words. I love to watch people and make up stories about them. Music plays a big part. I like to give my characters certain musical tastes. This may not come out on the page. But knowing my character is into Taylor Swift or rap tells me a lot about them.
Great way to chisel out your characters. (Royal)
Let’s use this section of questions to get to know more ABOUT YOUR BOOKS William.
Let’s start with, what should SOMEONE EXPECT WHEN READING YOUR SERIES or any of your books?
In the Zero series I hope to make them think about what is happening to our world in regards to global warming and over population. I hope they will enjoy the adventure my heroine is on. Reggan is what I call the reluctant heroine. The person who doesn’t want to save the world but needs to step up.

Where did you draw your INSPIRATION FROM FOR YOUR CURRENT WORK William?
There are a lot of YA books that I really enjoyed. I fell in love with the genre. A couple of years ago we got hit with a snow storm. I was force to walk home in the snow. It was while I was trudging home, very cold and miserable the image of my heroine doing the same filled my head. I asked myself. Where was she going in the storm? Why was she risking her life to get there? That was the seed for ZERO.
Brrr… (Royal)
William, any TRACES OF YOUR PERSONALITY in your main character?
I have self-image problems like Reggan. I wish I was taller and well better looking.
Can you tell us William, what is one of your FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT THIS SERIES?
My heroine finding she does have the inner strength to survive.
That’s terrific. (Royal)
Who is one of your FAVORITE CHARACTERS AND WHY?
Ellie is one my favorites because she is nothing like me. She walks her own path and will say things that I would never say. Ellie takes no crap from anyone. She has the confidence I wish I had.
Changing gears a bit William, I’ve noticed that you create fresh new worlds for your characters that change constantly. CAN YOU TELL US MORE about this? Do you answer plot twists through the book (series)? Why are you writing your plots in your books like this? And what do you hope your characters’ journeys in the books will inspire your readers to do and to wonder?
Boy, those are a lot of tough questions. The world I am creating for my characters is constantly changing as I learn more about it. There are a lot of things going on in Zero’s world. I try to answer some of the questions that are brought up as the plot moves along. I am doing this because too many time is the past writers had built up these complex conspiracies. You get to the end and are disappointed with the solution. I have just started this series but I know how it ends. I thought I could get there in three books but now it appears that the journey will take a little bit longer.
I am hoping that the reader will come to care about Reggan, Ellie and Trisha. If they care they will keep turning the pages. I think there is enough action to also make them turn the pages.
I hope at the end of the book the reader will look around and wonder what is happening to our world.
Now let me ask you William, who are SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE AUTHORS?
Tolkien, Hemmingway, Christie, Doyle and a dozen more.
There are so many new writers out there. Paula Hawkins who wrote GIRL ON THE TRAIN. She took an unlikeable character and made you care for her. Jonathan Stroud has just started an excellent series.
My personal hero is Robert B. Parker who told me I should write a novel.
What is one of the BEST PIECES OF ADVICE that you received or a quote that you live by William?
You know you are old when your dreams have turned into regrets. I am still dreaming.
William, what is ONE TIP and PIECE OF ADVICE you would like to share FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS?
This is a great time to be a writer. It is so different from when I first started. There are so many more avenues to get your work out there. Self-publishing and the Internet weren’t around when I started to write.
The one piece of advice I would give them is. Stop thinking about that book that you will start one day. Start that book today.
I’m sure aspiring authors will find this very helpful. (Royal)
So William, WHAT’S NEXT for you?
What are your UPCOMING RELEASES?
HUNTING ZERO will be released later this year. I making notes on SAVING ZERO.
And we will be looking for them. (Royal)
What should people EXPECT TO SEE FROM YOU IN THE FUTURE?
I hope the to complete the ZERO series but hope to get back to Chei Duguay my vampire hunter for hire. I have several adventures for her in my head.
What are you MOST EXCITED ABOUT?
I am excited that people are starting to discover my books. I actually did a happy dance when Zero got four stars on good reads. Someone liked my book. Which every writer loves to hear.
That’s exciting news. We are happy to hear that. (Royal)
