MEET THE AUTHOR
FEATURED EDITOR: JILL CORELY
Hello and welcome to Silver Beans Café. My name is Jacks, and I am one of the interviewers here at SBC. Today I am honored to be sitting down with editor JILL CORELY!
Thank you, Jill, for being here today. Let’s just jump right into the interview. Let's start out by GETTING TO KNOW YOU. What GENRE DO YOU EDIT AND WHY?
I edit fiction because it’s what I love to read. Reading romances, thrillers, fantasy, and science fiction are my favorite ways to spend time relaxing.
How did you START EDITING?
When I signed up on Goodreads as a beta reader, I automatically began making suggestions that fall within editing parameters ranging from noting typos to developmental issues. I received many great testimonials regarding my added editing and I was excited and happy to be able to help on a higher level than just giving a considered opinion on the story itself.
What are your GO TO EDITING RESOURCES? (books, websites, etc.)
I use multiple resources depending on the type of edit and what my writer prefers I follow. Internet is the fastest, but I do love to dive into a hard-copy reference book.
Outside of editing DO YOU ALSO DO REVIEWS?
I do believe in reviewing the books that I read. I post my reviews to Amazon, Goodreads, Barnes and Noble, and to my Facebook page.
And now, let’s talk ABOUT YOU
Not editing related, what are SOME OF YOUR OTHER INTERESTS?
I love spending time with my husband of 36 years and our dog, Shadow, just hanging out and going where the mood takes us. I enjoy listening to music of most types; I am very eclectic in music and art. I like to do DIY projects, and of course, adding to the honey-do list!
JACKS: (Laughs) love that!
What is ONE FUN FACT about you?
I have a very versatile sense of humor. Slapstick to cerebral…it doesn’t take much to tickle my funny bone. Snark and sarcasm are special favorites. I adore the Tony Stark character for his sarcastic wit. I love to laugh.
JACKS: It is nice to laugh! And agreed, everybody here on SBC is fond of humor as well as Tony Stark!
What are the BOOKS THAT YOU CONNECT WITH MOST?
I delight in books that have a mix of paranormal, sci-fi, fantasy, thriller, and romance. When a book is difficult to place in any specific genre, then that is a book I want to read.
JACKS: Haha, agreed! Those books are a wonderful reads!
Now, let’s talk a bit more ABOUT YOUR EDITING.
What is the MOST REWARDING ASPECT OF EDITING to you?
It’s the act of helping the writer have a wonderful experience with an editor who thoroughly loves helping them polish their stories. Seeing their success is so very exciting.
JACKS: It is easy to see why writers are happy to work with you!
What TYPES OF EDITING do you do? (errors, line by line, plot development, excessive word use, other, all of the above)
I do all individual style edits as per what the writer needs at the time. I also do an #EverythingEdit which addresses all types of edits at one time: punctuation, spelling, line, copy, overuse of specific words, developmental…whatever I can find that will take the reader out of the story. It’s the type of edit a writer will do on their own work; I am the second set of eyes.
Can you give insight as to what you are THINKING AS AN EDITOR ON INTAKE OF A PROJECT?
I live the story. I totally immerse my mind and heart into what I am reading; it frees me to see what needs attention. My favorite edit is my #EverythingEdit because it allows me to work on every aspect of editing at once. I enjoy being the new set of eyes on a manuscript.
While editing, WHAT ARE THE THINGS YOU FIND MOST that authors do?
They are the things that we all do when we write: transposed letters (typos), missed punctuation, missed words because you’re trying to get your thought on the paper, and sound-alike words (their, there, they’re). lie/lay, who/whom, just to name a few.
What is one thing that you would LIKE TO SAY TO ANYONE LOOKING FOR AN EDITOR?
Do your research to insure you mesh well with the person that will be helping you and ask for a free sample edit. Writers and editors are forming a working relationship over a very personal issue – a story from someone’s heart – and that requires trust on both sides. The editor should always have the best interest of the writer at the core of all the changes. The writer needs to trust that the editor is doing just that, whether they decide to accept the changes or not. In a word—communicate!
In life, what is ONE OF THE BEST PIECES OF ADVICE THAT YOU RECEIVED OR A QUOTE THAT YOU LIVE BY?
Never do less than your very best in all aspects of your life. Always strive for better. Don’t settle for less because it’s easier—go for it and make it count. Failure is always a lesson in what not to do the next time you try; don’t let it stop you. Use the information that failure gives you to work out a solution and try again.
JACKS: Absolutely Amazing Advice!
In general, what are you MOST EXCITED ABOUT?
I get excited over something every day; it’s part of my personality. It could be it the first tomato from my garden, pet shenanigans, getting a new or returning customer, completing an edit early and surprising the writer, talking to a friend I haven’t seen in a while, finding something as simple as a dragonfly on my flowers. Life IS Good!
