3 words to describe this novel: Coming of Age, Strength, and Forbidden
Behind Palace Walls is an honest snapshot of what life was like during the time of the pharaoh. It has a nice pace, and Chase does an incredible job of setting the scene and transporting you back in time. She does so in a way that it is definitely relatable and points out timeless elements of life (family connections, friendships, first crushes, and even shopping) in such a strong way that it is easy to translate the essence of the story to our own time. Although I would have loved to have had a shorter nickname for the lead character Sheshamun early on in the novel to connect with her even more, it did not diminish my reading experience. I connected with Sheshamun deeply because she was a smart well-developed character with a big heart, a lover of life, and an openness that helped her adapt to any situation. This story was such an interesting read that had me hooked from the start. I am usually not a huge fan of historical fiction, but Erin Chase did a phenomenal job with this book. I just loved it. Honestly, this coming of age story was so well written, timeless, and relevant that it could have be set in any time period. It was that good. I give this 5 STARS! Great read! The historical accuracy was spot on! I am already anticipating the next one! Jacks, Silver Beans Café Reviewer |
