MEET THE AUTHOR
FEATURED AUTHOR: MARCHA FOX
Hi, Jacks here. Today I am sharing quite a find as far as authors go! I came across this author and without question her words mesmerized me instantaneously. That is my way of saying that it is my utmost delight to share details regarding this warm, tremendously inspiring, and brilliant word whisperer, author Marcha Fox. Having said that, let’s hear what she had to say:
Hi Marcha, and welcome to SBC. Why don’t we begin by GETTING TO KNOW YOU a bit more.
What GENRES DO YOU WRITE?
I write classic, hard science fiction. As soon as I discovered it as a child, it became my favorite genre and inspired me to pursue a technical career. I hope to do the same for someone else someday.
I also write about some nonfiction topics, particularly astrology.
With what I have read so far, I most certain that you will!
Marcha, could you familiarize us with the TITLES OF YOUR BOOKS?
The Star Trails Tetralogy comprises the following:
"Beyond the Hidden Sky"
"A Dark of Endless Days"
"A Psilent Place Below"
"Refractions of Frozen Time"
Other titles related to this series include:
"The Star Trails Compendium" (Glossary of terms, background information about the planet I created and discussion suggestions for teachers who might want to use the series to promote science.)
"The Sapphiran Agenda" (Novella backstory)
Astrology
"Whobeda's Guide to Basic Astrology"
How did you START WRITING and when did you KNOW IT WAS YOUR CALLING?
I started writing as soon as I was old enough to hold a pencil. I loved books and wanted to create them.
Marcha, WHAT is one thing that we SHOULD WE KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I keep the science in my stories as accurate as possible while still allowing for the science fiction speculation side of things. I believe that learning should be fun and, too often, science is dry and boring. To the contrary, it is exciting, fun and essential to our modern lifestyle, which I try to demonstrate in my stories.
Before we dive into the books a bit more, can I ask you, outside of writing, what are some of your OTHER INTERESTS?
Cats, astronomy, astrology and quantum physics.
ABOUT THE BOOKS
Marcha, can you tell me, what should someone EXPECT WHEN READING ANY OF YOUR TITLES?
As an avid Star Wars fan, I include a lot of plot action, including various subplots related to the various characters' personal agendas. My series is populated with ordinary people who find themselves in difficult situations which often involve solving a scientific problem to find a solution. Readers can expect to learn some science along the way in what should be a painless and interesting manner.
I love it!
Which begs the question, where did you draw your INSPIRATION from FOR YOUR CURRENT WORK?
The initial premise was the result of seeing the first Star Wars movie many years ago. Upon seeing the movie, I thought "What if a rebellious, teenage girl accidentally got fired off in an escape pod?" And "Beyond the Hidden Sky" was born. However, the story soon became so complicated it required four books to complete!
(Giggling!) Books do have a way of doing that. I am excited to read about her!
Can you let us in on a secret Marcha, are there ANY OF YOUR PERSONALITY IN YOUR MAIN CHARACTERS?
First of all, the story turned out to be a family saga, so all members of the Brightstar family as well as various other characters have a voice at one time or another. Those who stand out the most are Creena, her brother, Dirck, and her father, Laren. Like Creena, I tend to cut to the chase and question everything. Like Dirck, I can be a bit of a pessimist and worrier. Like Laren, I tend to think things through and find logical solutions to problems.
So what I am gathering is that we are getting the many sides of Marcha. (giggling)
Continuing on here, what is one of your FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT THIS SERIES?
The way Creena and Dirck go from being essentially spoiled brats from an affluent family to learning to get along with each other and take responsibility for themselves and others.
So we can expect an evolution and depth weaved into these adventures as well. I thoroughly enjoy stories like that. Not only are we entertained but we grow right along with the characters in some way. That is refreshing!
All this talk about characters, has gotten my curiosity peaked, I have to inquire, who is ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTERS? And WHY do they hold your heart?
Besides the main characters, I particularly like Win Sendori. He just showed up in "A Dark of Endless Days" and immediately became an integral member of the team as Dirck's tough and practical best friend.
Here at SBC we like to ask you a few questions that are SPECIFIC TO YOU ALONE AS AN AUTHOR:
Can you please tell us more about your WEBSITE www.startrailssaga.com?
My official book website is www.StarTrailsSaga.com which includes book trailers, excerpts and buy links as well as a sampling of reviews and additional background information on the world I created. The glossary of terms and other details about Cyraria on the site are also included in "The Star Trails Compendium" plus a section for parents and educators who might want to use various situations and facts in the book as a discussion or learning platform.
I couldn’t help but to notice that you mentioned that you are FOND OF ASTROLOGY. And as I was on your author website, I noticed a link to your astrology website www.valkyrieastrology.com. Would you be able to SHARE A BIT ABOUT IT with me?
My astrology website, www.valkyrieastrology.com, contains the information I was looking for when I was first learning about it. Most books were too advanced and this was before there was much on the internet, so it was hard to find the "basics." Thus, when I set up my website, I wanted it to be informative, so I included what I would have wanted to find when I was a new student. The website has been used by various instructors to teach basic astrology, which inspired me to ultimately compile most of it into "Whobeda's Guide to Basic Astrology."
I was serious enough about learning to become a professional astrologer that I eventually enrolled in the International Academy of Astrology (IAA) and completed their professional training module. I taught for them for a few years until my writing muse started nagging me to complete my science fiction series. I have a few ebooks available on Amazon related to more detailed astrological subjects including "Lilith: Dark Maid of the Sith" and "Asteroid Archetypes: A Primer."
All this talk about books has made me wonder, when you start WRITING A BOOK WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS?
I have a rough idea of how a story begins, but usually don't know how it will end. It comes together like a jigsaw puzzle, scene by scene, that don't necessarily come to me in chronological order. I get an idea, it plays out in my head, and I capture it on paper. Sometimes my characters get themselves into a situation where I don't have a clue how they'll get out, so I leave it up to them to figure it out. I'm amazed how well that works.
Some authors like to control every little detail, and to me your creative choice to let the characters live, so to speak, and figure things out makes your process completely refreshing! That spontaneity, without a doubt, must shine through your words and makes each of your novels that much more enjoyable to read!
Staying on the subject of your novels, in your words, why do you believe READERS WILL CONNECT WITH THE BOOKS you write?
I believe that if I, as the author, don't know how a scene is going to play out, then it should contain enough suspense to keep the reader's interest. My stories are character driven, so I allow them to take charge as opposed to telling them what to do. Most of them are very strong willed and wouldn't take well to that, anyway. LOL. My favorite books contain lots of action so my own do as well.
So, some may not know it, but Marcha, you are a Rocket Scientist. And so, I just have to ask, what was the BEST PART OF WORKING for NASA?
Working at NASA was a dream come true. I didn't go back to school to get a physics degree until I was 35 years old and had six kids at home at the time. My then husband was also in school. I didn't make serious career progress until I was 40, but then moved fairly quickly. The best part of working at NASA was getting to see the various centers up close and personal, such as being within touching distance of the space shuttle in the Orbiter Processing Facility at Kennedy Space Center in Florida or watching how the huge External Tank was constructed at Marshall Spaceflight Center in Alabama. The bureaucratic part was less entertaining by far, but excellent background for future stories regarding how the chain of command works (or in some cases, doesn't). Participating in the recovery efforts after the space shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003 was a highlight as well. Writing up my NASA memoirs is definitely on my todo list.
You are such an inspiration! And I will be there to read them when you share those memoirs!
Not only did you work for NASA, you also instructed a variety courses. One of which was in character development. You have many techniques of writing that I find fascinating. One in particular snared my interest. Please indulge me for a moment and imagine we (SBC Readers) are your prior class and tell us more about your TRICK OF CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT VIA THE SUN SIGNS?
Giving a character a wellrounded personality can be a challenge, especially for new writers. It seems like when you gain enough experience writing fiction, characters come on the scene fully developed, but sometimes in the beginning it can be difficult to know what makes them tick and keep their behavior consistent.
Since astrology relates to personality with each sign having its own characteristics, if you have a few traits in mind you can usually determine what zodiac sign they are. Since each sign comes with a set of traits, you can then incorporate them into your character's personality and behavior.
That is quite the trick!
Moving back to your book, most specifically your characters, you mentioned that you lean toward Win Sendori as one of your favorite characters, HOW DID WIN EVOLVE from a minor player to an integral part?
When Dirck and his father went to the supply depot to obtain the parts they needed to build a heat exchanger to keep their primitive shelter cool enough to survive the planet's extreme heat season, Win was an employee there. Since he and Dirck were close to the same age, they instantly became friends. As various catastrophes struck, Win was always there to help, especially since he was more experienced with life in general. His "cando" attitude worked well to counterbalance Dirck's bouts with negativity, indecision and depression.
HAS THIS HAPPENED WITH ANY OTHER CHARACTER over the course of the series?
Not as dramatically as it did with Win. A few came along in "Refractions of Frozen Time" that took me by surprise and have potential for subsequent stories, like Antara Denale. She and Win would make quite a couple.
Marcha, I have got to say, you have a real gift of offsetting the characters that you populate to give a fleshy dynamic while mining knowledge and sharing it almost effortlessly. Is it something that you consciously strive to do or DOES IT JUST EVOLVE as you write the story?
Since my characters tend to arrive on the scene fully developed, I just let them take over. My background in physics and engineering covers much of it when such knowledge is required of a character. If it goes beyond that, then I have to do some research, which I thoroughly enjoy, especially since it usually opens up additional angles I hadn't thought of.
So honestly, Marcha, what is your BEST WRITING HABIT?
Once I really get into a story I tend to obsess on it and not want to do anything else. I don't know if that's good, bad or indifferent, but it gets the job done. If I get stuck, it will keep me awake nights until I solve it. I've gotten some of my best ideas just as I'm falling asleep and have to write it down or it could be gone in the morning.
I tend to write in layers with action and dialog coming easily, but then I have to go back and work in appropriate imagery and emotion. I taught a writing class a while back where I encouraged my students to examine their work using the acronym IDEAS where I = imagery; D = dialog; E = emotion; A = action and S = suspense. Making sure a story contains the right balance of each is important. Writing is a skill that takes time and practice to develop and being able to analyze your own work objectively helps a lot.
I am a fan of the use of acronyms, and that acronym is genius. The best knowledge is the one that is quick to stay in your mind!
Continuing on the subject of knowledge, you have a highly insightful view into ASTROLOGY and have stated that astrology IS BOTH COMPLEX AND RICH. Care to share IN WHAT WAYS and HOW WOULD SOMEONE BEGIN TO STUDY IT?
Astrology goes so far beyond the sun signs that I have shelves and shelves of astrology books addressing its various subtleties. Every sign and planet has its own interpretation and the planet's influence is affected by that placement. Furthermore, house placement comes into play, where the twelve houses represent different parts of your life. Thus, all these come into play with its interpretation. The horoscope for when you were born is your natal chart, but that is only one of many that have an impact. Where the planets are at any given moment in space is referred to as their transits. These realtime locations can influence your natal chart and deliver certain influences as well. My "Whobeda's Guide to Basic Astrology" is a good place to start because it covers these basics, but trust me when I say that is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
I know that you are NOT fond of the “oopsies” in Armageddon and your take on it was delightful and refreshing. I also am aware that you are diligent about the feasible mathematics and accuracy IN YOUR WRITING. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR YOU TO GET IT RIGHT?
I think learning should be fun and exciting, something most public schools have largely succeeded in destroying. My interest in science was cultivated substantially by science fiction, yet I always came away from a book a little disappointed because I didn't really learn any science from it. I thus set out to integrate the science with the story in such a way to make it interesting and exciting. The learning would not only be painless, but in context. So often students are disinterested in a subject because there is no relevance. When my characters' lives depend on an engineering or scientific principle it makes it a whole lot more interesting, to say the least.
In my opinion that is what sets your novels apart from any others out there today. They are so real, not dull in the least, and completely relevant!
Is there ANYTHING ELSE that you would add?
(Just that) I've received very positive comments from two science teachers who have placed the series in their classrooms as extra credit reading. Various reviewers have commented on the science as well. I would love nothing more than to hear from a reader someday and be told that Star Trails motivated them to study science or technology.
As well written as what I have read, I can see that happening!

Marcha, I noticed that you included a list of various TERMS ON YOUR WEBSITE, which are invaluable, what played a role in your decision to do that?
I set out to create a new world and wanted that to be apparent, yet it was difficult to balance that with being a distraction with unfamiliar terms. Some people love it and others don't. As a technical writer, I always defined a term at its first use, but of course in a book by the time you get several pages away, you may forget the meaning. Thus, I felt a glossary was important as a reference. I also included background information on various other parts of the story that might be of interest to someone who really got into the series.
All this talk about writing, let’s take a moment to talk about some other fun things in your life. Will you PLEASE TELL US MORE about your family, gardening, and your deep love for astrology?
Fun? What's that? As a Capricorn with a Virgo ascendant and Gemini Moon, I don't know what "fun" is, other than hard work done right and accomplishment. Seriously. I'm a workaholic.
To me, fun constitutes learning new things, the weirder the better. Thus, I'm a big fan of "Ancient Aliens" and all the other crazy TV shows that center around UFOs and other conspiracy theories. To me those are great fun.
This year I joined the Austin Astronomical Society (AAS) to pursue another longtime dream of learning more about astronomy. I live in a rural area and a resort a few miles away has a small observatory where AAS conducts star parties. I'm certified to operate their telescopes, which is definitely fun, plus I get to interact with people and tell them about the stars and planets.
There is no other way to say this except, how cool is that? That sounds as if it is incredibly fun!
Want to add ANYTHING ELSE?
I have fun at astrology conferences, too. To me they're the perfect vacation. I meet interesting people, network with fellow astrologers, learn new techniques, usually get to visit somewhere I haven't been before, the best part being it's all tax deductible.
Gardening dried up, literally and figuratively, during the Texas drought, but it has fortunately ended. Thus, I've been working on maintaining and improving my 1/2 acre in the Texas Hill Country. The summers are so hot, however, that now that the heat is setting in I won't be doing much other than mow the grass and water the flowers and a few herbs. The lake across the street is full again, thank heavens, given it was down to only 32% of capacity during the worst of the drought around 2011. Lake Buchanan is a huge reservoir with 34.9 square miles of surface area when full which is held back by a dam over two miles long. I'm considering buying a kayak so I can more fully enjoy living in this wonderful environment.
Sounds adventurous! I like it!
Will you PLEASE SHARE SOMETHING ELSE ABOUT YOURSELF, maybe a bit more about your family?
My family is scattered quite a bit, though three of my children at least live in Texas, so I see them from time to time. The nearest one is about 70 miles away, however, so it's not a daily thing. The other two are around 250 miles away which is a substantial drive. I have 17 grandkids and 4 great grandkids, but unfortunately I don't get to see them as often as I'd like, either. I'd love to have one of them stay with me for a few weeks in the summer, but they're all so involved in extracurricular activities they can't get away for that long. I try to lure them up to my place in the country a couple times a year, usually for a holiday like the 4th of July or Thanksgiving.
With the 4th of July holiday, just going by, I hope that you had an amazing time.
Speaking of downtime, Marcha, just curious, who were/are some of your FAVORITE AUTHORS to read?
As a kid I loved classic scifi like that written by H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, mainly because those were what I could find in the school library. There are some great new science fiction authors out there now, but I'd have to say my absolute favorite is Ceri London. Her "Shimmer in the Dark" series is spectacular, the way she blends metaphysics, physics, conspiracy theories and fantastic characters. I can't wait for the next one!
Off the top of your head, what is one of the BEST pieces of ADVICE that you received OR a QUOTE that YOU LIVE BY?
The first thing that comes to mind was something one of my physics professors said in a class that I took to heart. He said that anyone who really wanted to badly enough could get a bachelor's degree in physics. I didn't really believe I could do it, but decided to put it to the test. As it turned out, in my case, at least, he was correct, which I told him the day I graduated. He didn't even remember saying such a thing.
(Giggles) The best advice is like that. It is what you need to hear.
A quote that came to me when I was writing "A Dark of Endless Days" was "No mistakes, only detours." I'm not sure where that came from, but I really like it as well as a reminder to maintain a positive attitude, even when you mess up.
Incredible. I really like that!
What is one TIP you would like to share FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS?
Don't expect to be successful overnight. Writing style evolves with use, practice, study and reading the works of other authors. You can learn as much and sometimes more from those who aren't that good. Which reminds me of another favorite quote, "No life is ever wasted. You can always serve as a bad example."
(Laughs.) LOVE that one!
So Marcha, what’s NEXT FOR YOU:
What is the name of your UPCOMING RELEASES?
I'm currently working on another backstory about Thyron, the telepathic walking plant who first appears in "Beyond the Hidden Sky." It's entitled "The Terra Debacle" and covers the time when he's held captive at Area 51. I hope to have it done by the end of the summer.
When I get that finished up, I'll work on another novel I've started, "Dark Circles", which involves Allen Benson, a minor character in "A Dark of Endless Days." He was a teenager when Creena stayed with his family, had a huge crush on her and he's determined to find her again. He's finishing up a PhD at Caltech under the tutelage of Richard Feynman. Various consequences haunt his family since Creena's sojourn, which continue as he ultimately gets a job at Area 51, where her original ship is still detained. This story is going to be quite a bit darker than the tetralogy and take me a while to write. I have quite a bit of research to do as well as sketch out the plot. Unfortunately, I'm not an author who kicks out a new novel every month or so. It's especially difficult to balance my astrology practice with writing. Just when I want to get rolling on a story it seems my clients decide they need all sorts of readings! Never a dull moment around here, that's for sure!
What should people EXPECT TO SEE from you IN THE FUTURE?
Once I finish up those two stories, I might turn to nonfiction, at least for a while. I've wanted to write a book about astrology and the possible mechanisms for how it works that I suspect lie in the realm of quantum physics. More and more astrologers have a technical background these days and scientific discoveries in the quantum physics realm are more and more profuse. As part of that, I'd also address the history of astrology as it relates to both religion and politics, which tie into the scientific side as well. Clearly, this may well be more than one book to cover it all.
Sounds incredible! I’ll be hanging on ever words.
Are there any APPEARANCES in the near future?
I currently have two events on the calendar.
On July 23 the Austin Astronomical Society is holding their annual "Austin Under the Stars" event. I've been invited to be a speaker and will also be autographing books, which I'll have available. I'm still working out all the logistics, including a possible giveaway. It will be held from 6:00 pm Midnight, July 23, 2016 at St. Stephen's Episcopal School, 6500 St. Stephen's Drive, in Austin, Texas. You can find more information about the event at the AAS website.
AND
I 'll be the featured author on the podcast "Behind the Pen" coming up July 2nd (recent event). The 30 minute interview will take place online with hostess, Gwen Plano, at Noon Central Time. You can get to it via this link.
Currently, what are you MOST EXCITED ABOUT?
Showing that science is fun, exciting and essential to our quality of life. Without it we'd still be living in caves with stargazing our primary means of nighttime entertainment. (Still works for me.)
