Hello and welcome to Silver Beans Café. My name is Jacks, and I am one of the interviewers here at SBC. Today I am happy to be sitting down with POETRY, FICTION, SCREENPLAYS, AND HUMOR/SATIRE author MATT NAGIN!
Thank you, MATT NAGIN, for being here today. Let’s just jump right into the interview. Let's start out by GETTING TO KNOW YOU. What GENRES DO YOU WRITE?
I write poetry, fiction, screenplays, and humor/satire. My poetry, which is included in ‘Feast Of Sapphires,’ has been compared to the beats—perhaps because it is often free verse or stream of conscious and has a bit of a bohemian sensibility.
What are the TITLES OF YOUR BOOKS?
Poetry Books: ‘Butterflies Lost Within The Crooked Moonlight’ and ‘Feast of Sapphires.’ Humor Chapbook (avail on Amazon): ‘From The Fridge To The Crackerjack Box.
Outside of writing what are some of YOUR OTHER INTERESTS?
Other interests include film (I’m a filmmaker as well), standup comedy (I perform regularly), and travel. I’ve been all over the world—and travel whenever I can.
Let’s switch gears for a minute and talk more ABOUT THE BOOKS.
Can you tell us, are there ANY TRACES OF YOUR OWN LIFE WITHIN YOUR BOOKS?
There are strong personal elements and many elements of my psychological makeup/perspective in my poems.
We are curious, WHERE DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION FROM FOR YOUR BOOKS?
I draw inspiration from experiences, observation, and imagination. I would also say that words or phrases come to me—and I often build on that/follow them till I have a completed poem.
What is one of the BEST THINGS ABOUT WRITING?
I love the type of writing where the story or poem finds you as much as you direct it. This is more organic. Outlining is great too. But the process of discovery is really the best part of writing for me.
What is one of the BEST PIECES OF ADVICE that you received or a QUOTE THAT YOU LIVE BY?
‘Wherever the crowd goes run in the other direction. They’re always wrong.’ —Charles Bukowski. This is useful advice in life as well as writing. I love taking an unpopular point of view or combining genres in a way no one else seems to be doing. It is important to be antithetical to what has come before.
That is a great quote as well as great advice! I will carry that forward with me! Thanks! (Jacks)
What is one thing that YOU WOULD LIKE TO SAY TO YOUR READERS?

Next is a humor/satire book that collects previously published writings in The Daily Squid, Robot Butt, The Humor Times, Points In Case as well as a wide-range of previously unpublished work.

What is the NAME OF YOUR UPCOMING RELEASE?
My upcoming release is called ‘Feast Of Sapphires.’ It is meant to suggest both that the poems are sapphires, and that, in these uncertain times, we tend to be lured in by the bright and shiny object. So it is also a kind of S.O.S. book—implying the sapphires may have a bit of a menacing quality.

What should people EXPECT TO SEE FROM YOU IN THE FUTURE?
Look out for the humor/satire book. In terms of the poetry, I should be doing more public readings and will release recordings of a few poems with accompanying video imagery (video montage) at the time ‘FOS,’ is published.
