3 words to describe this novel: Haunting, Surprise Pops of Humor, and Stunning Descriptions
I connected with The Nefarious, Noble, and Nocturnal because although it dives into the world of the supernatural, I still found it to be very relatable on a real world level. Michael W. Holman accomplished that beautifully through the solid foundation of each of the stories’ dialogue. The dialogue, descriptions, and all other aspects of this book were done in such a refreshing way that I felt as if I knew the characters. The stories were all concise and hit the mark in my opinion by not overwhelming the reader with unnecessary details. Every word he elected to use had a meaning or further drove the story in some way. As I read the book, I would have loved to see clearer distinctions and indications as far as time shifts within the story via punctuation time markers, but it was not something that took away from the story in the least. It still was easy to follow. Could I envision the book as if I was watching it play out before me? The answer is yes. Michael W. Holman painted the descriptions with his words in such a masterful way that I literally could see everything. The way in which he describes the supernatural beings illuminated and revealing themselves—alone—makes this book worth the read. While reading The Nefarious, Noble, and Nocturnal, I found myself pleasantly shocked during different occasions in response to the twists. In some moments, given that I am not always the bravest, the author wrote it in such a way that he blended humor (things I admit sheepishly that I was saying aloud to myself) so that it felt jumpy in spots but not overly scary. I really appreciated that. That element added a nice depth to the story yet kept the momentum going for the fantasy thriller as well. All things considered, this book was entertaining, provoked an investment in the characters, delivered as far as strong storyline, and also had a different yet cohesive tone to the independent stories. Not easy to do, but here it was flawlessly done. If you want a short and rewarding read, then I would highly recommend The Nefarious, Noble, and Nocturnal. I am looking forward to the next book! I give this 4 STARS! Thank you, Michael, for creating a world that is exciting and a great place to escape to after a long day. You really wrote a thrilling one here!
